Rotarians Feed the Community Twice in One Weekend
Sunday, January 18, 2026
In back-to-back service events over a single January weekend, members of the Crystal City-Pentagon Rotary Club (CCPRC) rolled up their sleeves in support of Arlington neighbors facing food insecurity. On Friday, January 16, eight CCPRC members came together to assemble snack bags for students enrolled in Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) tutoring and after-school programs. Their goal was 100 bags, and they finished 122 in just 30 minutes. The bags were delivered to Virginia Gardens, an affordable housing community where AHC's after-school program serves 20 elementary students and 15 teens every day. The CCPRC members’ contribution was part of a larger community effort, as AHC received more than 3,000 snack bags in total to support its youth programs. A simple, healthy snack makes a meaningful difference, giving students the energy they need to stay focused, learn, and thrive.
The next day, nine CCPRC members and friends gathered at the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to sort and bag groceries for families in need. In less than one hour, the team bagged approximately 2,300 onions across 96 crates, ready for distribution to the roughly 4,200 Arlington families who rely on AFAC each week. AFAC is a cornerstone of food security in our community, and these hands-on actions reflect the kind of direct service that defines Rotary and demonstrates a commitment to meet real needs in the local community.
